I highly recommend the three-minute tour at
<http://chandlerproject.org/Projects/ProductTour>.

IMO there's only one key point missing from an otherwise excellent tour:

• mid-tour, an e-mail is sent from Chandler
• the tour takes us neatly away from Chandler Desktop, to Mail in Mac OS X
• missing: a hint that mail sent from Chandler does NOT appear in the Sent
area of Mail.

At that point: if the speaker adds an explanation, that Chandler Desktop
communication with IMAP servers is one way only — that Chandler can not
write to the Sent mailbox of a server — then the newcomer will not expect
too much from e-mail in Chandler.

Let's not be afraid to use the word "IMAP" in the speech. It will either (a)
mean something to the listener, or (b) encourage the listener to look to a
relevant page in Chandler wiki or wherever. In any case, hearing "one-way"
will plant a realistic expectation, of some sort, in the mind of the
newcomer.

Note to self: <http://chandlerproject.org/Projects/GetStarted> refers to
work in progress <http://chandlerproject.org/Projects/MoreChandlerBasics>,
whatever we do with the current welcome page and spin-offs should be
harmonious with this work in progress.

Broadly speaking, my intentions are:

1. primarily: make the 'Welcome to Chandler' concise, friendly, highly
focused on Chandler, link to the product tour

2. include a very simple graphic that shows Chandler Hub at the centre of
things (use recognisable product icons), emphasise the excellent
communication between Chandler Hub and Chandler Desktops.

3. secondarily and *very* briefly: for existing users of CalDAV clients
other than Chandler Desktop, offer links to pages where users of those
applications can learn to use them with Chandler Hub

4. simply link to maybe two or three separate pages for existing users of
Google Calendar beta (it's a CalDAV server, and more, but without support
for tasks/to-dos, and it's not a CalDAV client)

5. link to pages for existing users of iCalendar clients (e.g. old Apple
iCal 2) which can do no more than subscribe to publications from Chandler
Hub

6. link to <http://caldav.calconnect.org/implementations/clients.html>.

Think of 3, 4, 5 and 6 as products of 2.

Think of the things surrounding Chandler Hub as the fizzes, creating blue
bubbles in Chandler Desktop.

The fizz and blue bubbles idea is beyond what we want in a brief welcome :)
but it's fun to think about...
