Hi, I was evaluating Chandler on ubuntu 8.10 and liking what I saw. I wanted to move over from Evolution calendar/tasks (which are very limited) and it appeared to handle all of what Kontact does for tasks/calendar. I was comparing this to MS Outlook and the FranklinCovey Outlook plugin, PlanPlus. Unfortunately I upgraded to 9.04 and the use of Chandler came to an abrupt end as it crashed on start up.
So, in the time honored tradition I went for the source to build it. How hard could it be, I asked myself? Very, as it turns out. Which is too bad as it basically means I have to abandon Chandler before I really got going with it. After finding a number of patches floating around and applying them, and after beating on the makefiles a bit (for example, the curl downloads reach out for non-existant arch directories for the binaries on amd 9.04), I reached the point where I simply could not proceed further: the build fails while attempted to assemble the python egg, complaining about the CHANDLERHOME directory setting. I continue to look at it, but am frankly stumped as to why. Is there any kind of mentor program for Chandler if you want to hack on it? The bottom line is that Chandler source on 9.04 is not just "make install". Nor is a package available. So if you are on ubuntu 9.04 there appears to be no simple path to Chandler use. This has been noticed on the ubuntu forums in a couple of postings. Thus my request: Is there any chance of seeing a 9.04 package made available in the near future? Regards, Eric Carroll PS: As a feature request, drag and drop from Evolution (mail, calendar, tasks) would be highly desirable. In general better desktop integration to the point where I could use a mail only MUA / card file application, with Chandler as the tasks/calender, would be welcome.
