John's perfectly correct! 

In an expanded timeline: DONE and LATER are extents, with NOW at some
point(s) in between.

In my use of Chandler Desktop: I nearly always collapse and ignore the DONE
section.

So: my simple timeline is NOW and LATER, and within those sections: 

* Chandler Desktop puts things in order for me.
