I'm trying to find out how Chandler will help me, and I've looked at the FAQ, videos and use cases. I've installed it but am not ready for the hub account yet. I've a few observations and questions, the observations offered in the hope they'll be received in the constructive spirit in which they are meant.
1 Tooltips. There's a bugzilla entry about this, and I agree that this is currently a barrier to my learning, even given the glossary, what happens when you click on some of the things. There seems to be no undo button, so I'm a bit more hesitant about exploration than I would be :-) The bugzilla entry seems to suggest that this applies to 0.7.x, but it still applies to 1.3 on XP, in my experience. In the mean time, it might be useful to have a modal help button, which when down means all clicks on the interface tell you what they would do when the help button is up. The button itself just toggles. Maybe a checkbox would be better than a button for this. The cleanup "Recyle" icon is an interesting case: that icon usually carries semantics of throwing things away: like the XP recycle bin. I'm not sure if it deletes things marked as trash yet. 2 Docs The docs I've seen referred to in the mailing list archive are the getting started docs, and the FAQ. There doesn't seem to be a manual with more depth. It can't be found off the help menu, anyway. This too makes exploration more difficult. I know this is open source, and that docs take time, but if they exist then making them findable helps. 3 Preferences Thee don't seem to be any preferences. I'd like to increase the font size for a start, and I'd like to change the colours as well. I have just tried using high contrast (black) mode and only the right hand side and the top go into high contrast mode, light on dark. The rest stays dark on light, so I can't really reduce the glare when I need to. This could be classed as an Accessibility issue. On Windows, High Contrast mode (which will disturb your desktop layout even after you exit it, is toggled by <left_alt-shift-print_screen> 4 Sharing info between instances. If I don't use Chandler Hub, is there a practical way to share information between "home" and "office"? Is saving as a .chex file the way to do this? 5 Task Dependencies There is no intention to have Gantt charts, which is fair enough, and I agree with the simpler goal. I'm wondering if there is a way to express dependencies, so that completion isn't possible until subtasks are deemed complete, and so the partial ordering is used to push prerequisites into "Now", for example. I think I'd find something like that useful in helping me to stay focussed. 6 Without sharing & an Imap server, what do I get? I'm wondering that since I don't have a chandler server instance, or a machine to put one on at the moment, since I don't get my mail with IMAP, does this only leave the basic facilities of a todo list, or can chandler do more with my notes? I'm trying to work out how best to use this, and whether it suits me better than http://todotxt.com/ (clearly a question only I can decide in the end). Any insight would be appreciated.
