RON, You could build some parabolic attachable reflectors for the AP. Usually even with a "very low" or "low" signal you can several mbps out of it, so it shouldn't pose much of a problem. Last night I was pulling the full speed of the internet connection (1.5/1.5) about a half mile from the AP while windows reported a "very low" signal strength. Of course, it probably helps to have a 2 senao 200 mw products at each end.
I also have a laptop and would be willing to help test.
