I built such a system years ago, following instructions from the book 
"Linux Firewalls" by Robert L. Ziegler.  I think it was on a Pentium 
90.  It was fun watching all virus and worm hits from MS machines scroll 
off the screen....

Nowadays I take the easy road - bought a LinkSys router.
