Although I haven’t been reading much horror recently I have been reading
Fritz Leiber’s “Swords Against Death”. Some of the stories are very dark
indeed, such as the wonderful “The Bleak Shore”, with victims compelled
to heed the call of death. And at least one, “The Howling Tower”, can I
think be considered a horror story. A very creepy atmosphere, and the
idea behind it, of a man haunted by the ghosts of dogs who must find
victims to assuage their hunger for souls or be driven mad by their
other-worldly howling, is brilliant. I’d forgotten how good Leiber could be.
