it's probably old news to everyone else, but saturday during one of my
unfortunately rare (because of an absurd work schedule) trips to a used-book
store i came across a volume i'd never encountered before, called something
like "dark ladies," pairing our lady of darkness with conjure wife. i was
really tempted to pick that one up (especially since the store in question was
selling all its tpbs for $1 each), but since i have both novels in regular pb i
passed.
both novels are excellent. i've noted before that some 3 decades have passed
since i read our lady of darkness as serialized (as "the pale brown thing") in
f&sf. it's been even longer, i guess, since i read conjure wife, also as
serialized in a newsstand mag (the only 2 issues of marvel's haunt of horror
digest).
this summer i did finally watch the movie version of conjure wife, though for
some reason i forget the title (in the uk it was released as night of the
eagle, i believe), & quite liked it. our lady of darkness could make a pretty
decent film as well ... sort of like the movie "pi" as channeled through
j-horror, or something.
