Bret Victor seems to get this right when the level of the model is constrained 
enough and that is no small feat. 

I think we are all searching for a more generalizable approach where you are 
not modelling equations but you are trying to create ways to visualization the 
creation of those equations. That extra degree feels to me like a combinatorial 
explosion of difficulty. The thing that is particularly challenging is that 
when it is done well it looks so simple as to be obvious, but then again that 
simplicity is so very hard to achieve.
