I don't handle big data (or even medium data) but I remember a couple of years ago I played around with Eureqa http://www.nutonian.com/products/eureqa-desktop/academic-license/ which is a tool that is really useful for finding patterns in data. It seems the license terms have changed since I last used it because I remember downloading the free version with no hassle.
