The shortcut <Windows Key>+D shows/hides the desktop.  You can hit Windows+D, 
launch your app, then hit Windows+D again to restore all windows.

Caveat: the latest version of Windows I’ve used is Win7; I’ve never used Win10 
or ever Win8.
