Some possibly interesting background from an unrelated context: homemade diodes:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foxhole_radio homemade transistors: http://www.douglas-self.com/ampins/wwarchive/wwarchive.htm#home homemade integrated circuits: http://hackaday.com/2010/03/10/jeri-makes-integrated-circuits/ Personally, I keep hoping for a project based on building a homemade vacuum chamber and ion beam epitaxy - perhaps using coils from a scavenged old crt rig. Something not too far from a scanning tunneling electron microscope. That might allow a gcode approach, re-using some of the skill set from 3d solid printers. Jeri's approach isn't that, of course, but her work is exciting. But I've not found anything like that yet. So, I'm risking repeating maybe old news... (not that there's anything wrong with that). (Anyone seen anything more along the lines of personal ic printing? (I'm not really looking for fpga implementations, though.))
