I sympathize with you.  I have been there and done that, twice.

In my house, the humans are also outdoor humans even in these surreal
times.  Some time ago, Midnight went missing for twelve days; then, while
having breakfast outdoors, as usual, I heard a distant familiar
meowing.  Apparently,
she got carried away chasing an iguana and jumped into the water.  We had
to dismantle part of a neighbour's dock to free her.  (With hindsight, also
&. comes to mind.)
