Joe, I find that a very interesting idea. It made me think of “The Incredible Machine,” a 1990s DOS game that presented a gallery of elements (candles, mandrills, teapots, etc.) from which you had to construct a Rube Goldberg device to accomplish a task. The universe of elements was large, like the universe of verbs, adverbs and conjunctions in J.
What made it work in the early stages of the game was that, for any given puzzle, you only had a small subset of elements to work with. So you got a gentle introduction to an increasing number of elements with which you could create increasingly complex devices. Eventually you had so many elements to work with that the solution you came up with was unlikely to be the one the game anticipated (even if it worked).
