The good news is that I am finally up and running with a "J" item
sitting within my menu system. Basic tests indicate that everything is
fully in order. However, getting there was Hell!

I am running (dual boot with XP) Ubantu 7.1 "Gutsy" ... which, I found
out later already has Sun Java 6 loaded within the package but not used
by default. When I downloaded more Sun Java 6 stuff most of the programs
that were using the default Java version simply quit, froze or
crashed ... but J kept running just fine.

Finally .. more by luck than good judgement .. I got Sun Java 6 to be
the default. I was getting ready for a THIRD reformat and reinstall.

There is Ubuntu documentation to simply make Sun 6 Java the default
form ... for future installers that has to be the only way to go.

The 'Synaptic Package Manager ' within the system is an absolute winner
in that with "compliant" software it ensures that not only the software
is correctly put into place but all other associations are correctly
looked after and there is no need for neophytes like me to get enmeshed
in the 'dreaded terminal '. Maybe one day J will install this way.

My thanks to everybody that offered help ... like so much in life a
thorough reading of the manual before doing the job would have saved me
much grief.

David
