I think 1 is the least confusing for the user - if the meaning of the progress bar keeps changing within the run it might cause some uncertainty about what is actually happening. 2-alt might be okay though, if a bit harder to implement. Anyway I think it's more meaningful for the test to provide information about it's progress in the form of console output rather than just updating a progress bar.
