Thanks for the replies, A and A!

I always run as root (valuing convenience over pseudo... I mean, sudo
protection). So I changed the user and group in Cherokee's admin to root,
and it worked! I can access the html files in the vfat partition.

I'm at home now, tinkering with this (the server is a small computer). I can
access the pages from my home machine on my home LAN, but I also run as root
with that machine. Should my students (all logged on as "user") be able to
fetch the pages as well?
