Yes, the directory does exist. Permissions for owner and group are set for www-data... I don't see anything wrong there.
I thought this too and even recreated the directory manually to be sure. This issue only exists in the latest few trunk releases. 1.01 release works fine ~ we rolled back to that version for now.
