The 'configure' script uses those parameters to generate the initial
configuration file (cherokee.conf).  That file is ONLY installed on the
first time installation of Cherokee, or which is the same, "make install"
will not overwrite your configuration file when Cherokee is installed. If
there was a previous cherokee.conf file installed, it will preserve it.

What happened in you case then?  Your current configuration file does not
define any user/group.  What you have to do?  Launch cherokee-admin, and
configure it from there, there is no need to recompile the server.
