My first thought is to get rid of the Hayes set up. You might look into
going with a Kevlar pressure plate with a matched pressure plate. The
Kevlar clutch plate will be tough, but not grabby and jerky.

I have a small block 4 speed car with a Kevlar clutch and it works
great. The owner before me had it set up with a racing clutch. The old
clutch would make the car jerk shudder and shake. The old clutch took so
much pedal pressure to disengage, I could almost hear the seat brackets
creak and groan when I pushed the clutch in.

Granted mine is not a big block car... but check it out.
