Well, here's the update. The canister-to-spin-on oil filter adaptor that my
friend gave me was NG for my application. It was just a cup-shaped thing w/
a threaded rod for the filter to spin onto and holes around the center.
There was nothing behind the surface that the filter mounts against. Since
my block also has nothing in the dome-shaped housing, there was no way to
force the oil down the center of the adaptor & filter. So, this adapter
would have rendered the filter useless. I guess this is the type I had heard
about where somebody said that this adaptor had to be mounted on top of
another adaptor.
I ordered another adaptor from Jegs for $12, and I could see from the
picture that the Jegs unit has something behind the surface that the filter
mounts against, which should sit flush against the oil inlet on my housing
(hopefully) and force the oil down the center. Unfortunately this means the
motor has to wait 2 weeks since I will be out of town next weekend. Bummer.
Also, I bought a brand new Carter AFB carb and it would not mount on the
original 1958 cast iron intake. I only found this out after I thoroughly
bead blasted and blew out the intake. Another bummer. I gave the intake to
my friend Rick and he is going to try to find an aluminum intake for me.
So, now I am shooting for having it running the weekend after next as a
best-case scenario.
