You're probably right about that....I've got a hole in my floor from the leaky heater box seal, so I'm going to have mine done the right way in case I decide to do a frame off one day. I hate doing things twice. But as far as what others have done, I'd have to agree that many have done it that way..... just not the right way for me.

Unprofessional !  That's your opinionio and that's great.
 BUT I would be williing to BET that 90% of the floor's replaced are lap seam welded in.
 where you cut the NEW pan to fit a few inches bigger then the rused area.
You then lay it on top of the floor and spray paint  it outline on the floor and cut out the old floor leving about 1/2 to 3/4 lap  weld your new pan.
