First you have to set the lifter pre-load when you put the heads on the engine. Then you do the final adjustment when the engine is running. There's all sorts of prep work too to make sure that the thing will be well lubricated until it starts to build up oil pressure. It’s a long story that I can't really tell right now. Hopefully somebody else will fill in the blanks.

Is that all the things you have to do when starting up a brand new motor?  If it isn't, could you tell me what they are?  How do you adjust the valves?

Yes, you are supposed to adjust the valves while the engine is running, and you are supposed to make sure that oil is pumping through all the pushrods and that in general nothing seems to look or sound unusual. You can see pix of the cutout valve covers that I used to reduce oil spillage during this operation at http://johnnasta.com/elcamino

Don't they!  would you happen to know how long a engine swap and replacing whatever needs to be replacing would actually take?  It would be nice if it was really a half hour - wouldn't it?  Don't you have to take off the covers for the valves and check the valves when the engines running?  my dad said he had to do that with his impala SS when he blew up the 327 and swapped in the 283.  and he said that you took off the valve covers and check the valves beating up and down and listen (or whatever it is) for errors...is this true?
