Larry, You were right. I got under the car and cleaned off the cover and it really said 308. The 3 was covered with dirt.I think that is the gears. The welds all look factory except where someone has added a sway bar. It has a tag that says something like use limited slip lube only.Maybe if I do some more cleaning I can find some more numbers.Thanks for the info. first of all unless someone was a great welder you should be able to tell by all the brackets. i can find no where that a 80 rearend will bolt up under your car.
i don't have 64 info in any of my books but i do know 64-67 chevelle rearend will bolt under your car. 68-72 will too but the are a different width. are you sure the 80 is for 1980 and not some production factory code marking?  Here is a link to 64 rareness.
