I know of the fact that you can fill the tank with an inert gas..... my problem with it though is the fact that even though it has been cleaned out and it is supposed to be "perfectly safe" there is room for error, if it were an ultra rare car I might risk my hide to save the tank (remember to be old and wise you must first be young and stupid) but in a way I would still be paraniod.  Its like every time someone wants to splice a brake or gas line at work they want to use a compression fitting, I won't sell them, seen the havac of a failed one too many times.  Same goes for the welding the tank, I have a dead friend who 10-15 years back (Dads buddy) was welding the tank to a MG the "safe way" for someone else and it seems that it just didn't work, 'cause he didn't walk out when the thing decided something wasn't right.  Thats why I won't do it.
