Hey guys, I'm asking a question on behalf of a good
friend who doesn't have internet access anymore.. For those of you that might
know him, Norm's a member of the NorCal Chevelle club and helped found the SoCal
Chevelle Camino club a few years ago.. Anyway, Norm's 72 Malibu grenaded the
motor and he's in the process of rebuilding it.. He removed the heads, which
appear to be original to the car and never previously removed, and here's the
issue--
The casting # on top of each head is 3998993.. I
haven't verified this myself, but I guess they're the 1.94 intake heads.. Well,
on the bottom one has 993 cast into it and the other, instead of having 993 has
487X... According to his Small Block V8 ID guide it says the 487X head (or, any
head with an X at the end like that) is a little bit more high performance of a
head with some more intake room (5-7 cc's if I remember correctly)... Isn't it a
little strange that a car would receive one "hi-po" head and another regular
head? He and I both figured strange things were going on when his and my cars
were being built (UAW strike, etc) so anything's possible.. Anyone have an
opinion on this mismatching head phenominon? And, anything to worry about for
Norm when he rebuilds his motor? He was planning on reusing the heads (after
having them cleaned up and having hardened valve seats installed) but if that
couple of cc's will make a big difference as to the driveability of his car he's
willing to find other heads..
Thanks guys!
