Hey chuck, does the 6 digit rule apply to all part #'s or just the later years? The 99 may mean dealer installed. But it's not the rule for all part #'s. Now I'm talking from what I know from work. This is how it works at Hydra-matic. Say you have a part # 8624124.
The 86 means Hydra-matic, the 24 is model,(400 trans) and 124 is the description. (clutch plate) Now this same part # has been used during the full run of the THM400. So it does not give the year just the model. Dealer installed options probably are different. They need to know year, model and what it is.

The 995592 mirror is a: "Mirror, outside rearview, sport, remote, L/H, '77 A-body"
The 994929 mirror is a: "Mirror, outside rearview, sport, manual, R/H '76-8 F-body"
The six digit part numbers indicate these were dealer-installed pieces, not installed at the factory. Hope this helps.
