Here is more info on the rear end question:

The narrowed rear clip for my 71 Chevelle has a rear axle housing that measures 34 inches flange to flange (not axle to axle). The frame rails measure 24" wide.

I called the manufacturer of the clip and spoke to them (S&W). They said their weld in "ladder bar" clip (specific for 64-72 Chevelle) requires the use of a 39.5 inch rear end (flange to flange).

He then said that the universal 4 link rear clip (when used in the71 Chevelle) does not use a 39.5" rear end, but instead uses one that measures 34 inches.

Does this sound right? I didn't think there was a difference in rear end length when selecting ladder bars over the 4 link setup.

Does anybody have any insight concerning this or theories?

Thanks again,
Kyle Bennett

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-List] ** Is this rear end worth while? **

I just removed a 48" wide 9" Ford from under my 69 El Camino with 15x14 Centerlines & 18.5x29.15 MT Sportsmans. 34" is way too narrow for your '71,IMO.

For those of you that have knowledge in narrowing Chevelles, i have an important question that needs an answer within 3-4 days.

I have located a narrowed rear end for my pro street project that measures 34 inches (flange to flange).

Do you think this rear end width is about right for a 71 Chevelle? I know backspacing can be altered to acquire a better fit, but does the width seem to be in the correct range for my 71 project with 15x14 rims on 31x18.5 mickeys.

Please give me your comments or suggestions concerning this rearend. If i get it, i need to make it happen within 3-4 days.

Or if you know of a company that may be able to answer this question it too would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks a million,
Kyle Bennett
