Jim, Don't use WD40. Use a white lithium grease and use it lightly. If you
remove the cable you can hang it over night and let the lubricant work it's
way down the length by gravity. WD40 will make things better briefly and
then worst after it evaporates.
The Kano products others have mentioned on this list are also very good.
