Ken Walker does some of the best musclecar work around here in North Texas. His shop is in Burkburnett and he did a lot of the work on my former 68 El Camino. Give him a call at (940) 569-0611.

Clint,

I can see the need for trans fluid to come up to temp but another $450/$500 radiator is not in my budget right now.  I figure if I give the trans a chance to warm up a bit on those cool (LOL) 60º days, it'll be alright.  I disbelieved the "...no fuel mileage improvement..." part as well.   A 30% reduction in engine speed has to improve mileage, especially when we're talking 3 to 4 hrs of steady highway speeds.  It may even lose a bit of mileage in town due to the converter slippage in Drive, but I can live with that.  BTW, it was Jeff I talked to.  He wanted no part of a installation and "fabrication of the rear mount, cutting the driveshaft, etc..."  He did mention Ken Walker (?) but I may still take it to Phoenix Trans in Weatherford since they will install everything. They're also a Lokar dealer so I can get the throttle-body attachement and Lokar cable to match the throttle.

Subject: Re: [Chevelle-list] Trans cooler

I ran just a big auxiliary cooler on my 40 F*rd coupe streetrod with built L98 engine,TH350 trans, and Halibrand QC rear. Ran the car that way for over six years without any problems. Not convinced you need to change the radiator.
The trans builder's credibility took a big hit when he said you wouldn't see a difference in fuel mileage with an OD trans. BS. My 91 Chevy 1/2 ton truck will get 15mpg on the road using Drive only. Using 4th,it will get 20mpg. My former 68 Elky with 468"BB went from 10mpg to almost 16mpg after I installed the 700R4. My present 69 Elky went from 16mpg to over 20mpg when I swapped out the 4spd for the 6spd.

I spoke with a guy tonight about building a 200-4R and he said something that kind of surprised me.  Even if you run an auxiliary trans cooler, you should still run through the radiator connections as this helps to warm up the trans fluid to help the seals.  If you start anew on a cool day (60º was his example), it takes the trans too long to warm up via just the auxiliary cooler.  Anyone hear of something like this?  What should minimum trans temp be?  I think 200º is on the high end, but what's low and what's optimum?

I'm getting antsy to swap my M20 4-speed setup for a 200-4R but don't have a trans cooler in the radiator.  I bought a B&M 24,000 GVW Super Cooler unit and now I'm told it won't warm up the trans fast enough?

He also said that the O/D won't improve mileage to any degree.  Somehow I think reducing RPM's from 3000 or so at 75/80 to 2000 or so has to improve mileage - am I wrong here?  Currently I'm running 2100 at 55mph.  I find it hard to believe that I'm not using more fuel at 3000 RPM (75/80 MPH) than I am at 2100 (55 MPH).  With the O/D, I can run the same 75/80 MPH at my current 55 MPH RPMs.
