Another suggestion would be to take the battery down to your local battery place and have it load tested.

Sarge, Check the battery itself. You may have plates shorted internally. Definately diconnect it from the car as it could explode and cause major paint damage. Do a polarity test. also check the specific gravity with a hydrometer to see if a cell is dead.

Well, so much for the fishing trip.....Saturday I was planning on going fishing, but when I hopped in the Chevelle, and hit the starter, everything electrical died.  It's the craziest thing.  I think I have a short on one of the starter lines.  Here's the deal.  When I hit the button (I use a starter button/vice the turnkey) I heard a click, and everything went dead, now here's the tricky part, when I hook a test light up to the negative terminal on the battery, anything I touch with the tool, will cause it to light up.  Everything metal on the car has a charge.  And the only good ground on the car is the negative terminal of the battery.  If I disconnect the battery terminals, and then reconnect them, everything comes back to normal.  I think what's happening is the starter wire is shorting out on the body somewhere, and when I activate the button, it charges the frame.  Does any of this make sense?  I know I'm kinda rambling here, but it's a pretty complex problem, and it's hard to explain simply.  Any of ya'll have any ideas?  I think this winter I'm going to install a Painless wiring kit.  It will be worth it.  The wiring in my car is so hacked up from previous owners, it's impossible to trace them.  John, do you sell the Painless kits?  If so, how much do they run?  It's for a '69.  Thanks in advance for any inputs.  I hope to get my baby back on the road tonight.  I missed most of the good season up here dropping in the new motor, I'd hate to miss out on the last few nice days, because of a stupid wire.
