I think I finally figured this out.
The sheet metal in the cowl area is high in the middle and slopes to the
sides of the car in order to shed water that would otherwise collect in the
cowl area. Modifying this would probably present problems for water leakage
and rust. As you suggested, the solution is to open up the firewall where
you can above the cowl sheet metal, and build a long box that covers the
hole (build a plenum). Then the Ramair box can plug into the plenum. This
would require little or no modification to the Ramair box and still provide
a relatively clean install.
