Not that I'm
saying a 2.73 is optimal, but I have a 2.73 with a 700R4. The engine is
a 350 built relatively conservatively(Hydraulic lifters, cam has .45 lift with
216/216 duration, Performer Intake, World S/R heads) and does OK. I get
some bogging in the 1-2 shift, but even if the transmission shifts into lockup
OD at 30 mph (about 1500 rom) the car still runs fine. First gear is
pretty deep, so acceleration will be better with a 700R4 than a 350 in first
gear. Around town the car basically is a three speed, rarely seeing OD
and I get anywhere from 10-13 mpg doing 2 mile round-trips. Get out on
the open road and 20 mpg is not a problem. The best I did was a 150 mile
stretch of 24 mpg when I was just cruising at 65.
All that said, I
would recommend a 2004R because you don't have massive horsepower and you can
do the swap more easily. You can always do the rear gears in the
future. That was my plan 10 years ago and I still have not gone down
that road. One of these days I'll go for some low to mid 3's, but until
then I am fine.

then some one said a 400 then a 350 what would give me the best gas milage

The TH350 with a lockup converter is the best one to go with in this
situation. I would rule out a 700R4 and a 2004R only because it can
actually give you worse gas mileage depending on what gears are in the
rear. A 2.73 gear ratio and a 700R4/2004R don't mix very well.
You would not be in the optimum RPM range for the overdrive to function
properly unless you were doing 75 MPH.
