That's correct; the smugglers box is not big enough for the spare tire. But it is just big enough for the battery, Airride tank and compressor, and a bottle of nitrous :)

John, the spare tire goes behind the passenger seat on a 68-72.  That compartment is no where near big enough for a tire.
