My first Chevelle was when I was 4 in 1969. Dad bought my
uncle's ss 67 chevelle. Uncle Doug had just got it and was drafted to 'nam. It
was red with black interior and 4-speed. Man I still remember how it felt
when dad would rip through the gears.
Interestingly enough dad had a friend that had a
66 GTO. Blue and a three speed I believe. I remember riding in it to go
fishing, no car seats then, I remember standing up in the back seat area holding
on to the back of the front seat!!
Then my uncle Mike had a 66 SS Chevelle. It was an
orange/white interior 4 speed car.
Out of the three cars, Dad's is the sole survivor, although a
basket case I have the parts to rebuild it and hope to in the near future. I
want to do it with a six speed and fuel injection on a big block. Thought
about a 496 but will probably consider staying with a 396 and add nitrous for
the other couple of hundred on demand horses and get some mileage while on the
freeway.
The Goat bought it in a parking lot of all places, an
old lady ran into it and panicked and instead of hitting the brakes she stayed
on the gas.
That was mid 70's
Uncle Mike sold his years ago but found it
sitting in a field about ten years ago. It may have been put back together but I
really doubt it. It is probably still rusting into the
ground.
It is true when they say your basic personality is formed in
the fist few years of life, I also remember my dad having a 54 Chevy with a 49
olds engine, my uncles having an MG, and when uncle Doug returned he bought a
70-ish Camaro but didn't keep it long. I don't remember if it was anything
special. Then my uncle Larry had a 69-ish 442 convertible until it was
repossessed. I remember that was the early 70's, maybe 72-73 and things were
tight with my family and they had come to stay with us and when the repo man
came I tried to bargain with food stamps. That car was cool! Yellow with black
interior. He late had a Gold Duster Plymouth.
