This is true of any inkjet printer manufacturer.  An inkjet printer for home use is not a profit item for the manufacturer, they would take a loss on the printer as long as they locked up your ink business.  It is only a means of selling you their ink cartridges.  The more of their printers in the field, the more ink sold and more profit generated.  Think of the price per ounce of ink and multiply that by the millions of printers in the field.  Now that is a cash cow!

Head clogging is the big problem with inkjet technology.  Always has been, and always will be.  Also air bubbles in the jets of the print head causes problems.  You need to find a printer design that can effectively clean the nozzles to avoid the clogging problems inherent with the technology, regardless of who manufactures the printer.  Our company manufactures both inkjet and thermal printers (amongst other products) for the signmaking market.  We deal with the same problems as HP, Epson, etc..  Printers sure are a neat thing to sell, but the real money is in the consumables.
