Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. Eddie had it right. The starter wires somehow made it to the exhaust manifold and melted together to the manifold (I can be such a bonehead sometimes). I was on my way to the parts store to get some wire when the UPS guy showed up with my new engine harness from Year One. I'm pretty excited to rewire the engine bay. My old wiring is so butchered that I don't recognize the attachment connectors on the new harness. I'll figure it out when I lay them side by side, but I doubt the colors will be the same.

My next question. The new wiring harness is for an original setup. I have an HEI distrubuter. What do I need to do to make it work?

You replaced the starter but not the solenoid? Are you using a stock
starter, a remote solenoid, or a mini starter?

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Starter problems

Hello all. I'm new to the list. I have a 66 Malibu Convertable with a
slight problem. I replaced my starter and it worked fine. I started it up
3 or 4 times after the installation. Today I went to start it and the
started would not disengage. It just kept on trying to start itself. I'm
thinking the solinoid. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Thanks
