The rubber ring on the filter seals against the block.  Some adapters seal against the block with a second surface to seal to the filter.  This gives you one more place for a leak, which is what I ran into.  The adapter bolts in with two bolts to the block.  Compare this to the cheaper MRG-1270 (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=MRG%2D1270) that has O-rings and does not have a bypass valve.  I would use either the 1272 or the GM Performance Parts NAL-3952301.

Hi again

Thanks a lot to all of you answering my question. I guess the one who rebuild the motor for me forgot to put this piece back.

However, this might qualify for the stupidest question of the month. The MRG-1272 and other similar adapters have just a male “bolt” for the filter and nothing to tight against the sealing on the filter. The filter has a ring of holes, doesn’t the oil leak out there?

You need the "oil filter adapter"
I bought this one:
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=MRG%201272
when I needed to replace a leaking old one (different brand).

There's a piece, which is not part of the block. I forget the name.
It is Item #20 on this picture -

I'll try to find out the name of it and post a reply.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Oil filter SBC

During  the assembly of my motor (original 350 from 92) I
ordered an oil filter from K & N prod # HP-2002. Surprisingly
to me the block has no "bolt" for the filter.
1. Have I ordered the filter? Looks pretty normal to me
2. Is something missing on block? Or do I have some
special block which needs a different kind of filter?

Anybody how know whats wrong?

I was told the block is out of a 92 G20 van. So according to
K & N, both HP-3002 and 2002 should fit.
