Carb Recommendations
Devin,
Basically, I'm having intermittent problems with the one I have. I
have recently replaced both intake and exhaust gaskets, including the one
that goes in between the two, and bought a parts store rebuilt 1 bbl
Rochester. I have the following issues...
1.
fuel/air mixture - I can adjust it, and over a week or so, I end up rich
again.
2.
idle - sometimes it idles fast, and can't be adjusted down, and other times,
it idles fine.
3
spits and sputters when I accelerate when cold, or until the engine fully
warms up
Because of these reasons, I just want to replace the carb once again
- but want something with automatic choke, either electric or otherwise.
When running right, this 250 runs plenty strong for me, I just want a card
that's well mannered and reliable, and the first two Rochesters I've been
involved with has been a hassle.
Of
course if you have headers or intake for my 250, I wouldn't mind trying to
talk you out of it...LOL

Larry- Why do you want to replace your
carb? Having built a few Chevy sixes, stock to wild, and spent some
time with the gurus at Clifford Performance, it is possible to adapt other
carbs to the stock manifold, but not worth it for performance
purposes. The most you'll gain is about 5%. I've put (gag)
pinto 2bbl carbs on with the thought of better driveablilty, but actual
improvement was little, especially for the amount of adapting
involved. I've also seen 350 cfm Holley 2bbls used, same scenerio,
but they are not progressive, so it makes throttle response worse.
I've had best success on built up engines with either Clifford's 4 bbl
manifold and a 390 Holley, or my first home-made setup, 3 stock 1 bbl
carbs each on their own individual runner to the intake port. I had
a bunch of time in that setup, and tuning was a nightmare, but it ran like
a scalded ape from about 4000 rpm up.......until I ventilated the
block. Not of much use in your truck anyway.

Carb Recommendations
Hi
Guys,
I would like
to replace my carb with another one or two barrel carb on my in-line 6
cyl. 250 cid engine, a 1970 model. I would like to put something on it
that would plug and play, with either an automatic choke where the
spring and rod setup on my manifold would hook right up, or comes with
an electric choke I can wire up (preferred).
This
application is my 1970 GMC Truck. I appreciate your
feedback.
