All alternators are suppose to charge at idle,hence no light.  That is one of 
the reasons the car manufacturers went to them.  They are far superior to a 
generator in charging at idle or any speed for that matter.   My "69" with an 
alternator has no gen light at idle. Just my two cents.

I think some alternators dont charge at idle, but if you hit the gas they do. 
That may be why the light comes on.

on my 71 elky the gen light glows when i first start it. as soon as i get on 
the road it goes out and does not come back on even at stops or with the lights 
on, what might be my problem?

it still has the external regulator.
