Rick, I think you have touched on the real cause! My 65 Malibu suffered from fuel starvation due to the blocked and broken sock and the gunk that came through. Cleaned the tank, removed the sock and fitted an in-line fuel filter. You said that you checked filters. How about the fuel sock in the tank? It may be allowing enough fuel to pass for normal driving, but not enough when you get on it?????
