Yes, this news is true, if we believe the media report. It appears in
the Dainik Bhaskar Raipur edition dated 19 Feb 2009. Its a front page
news, appeared in the right-central part, though the content is very
less.

A better life for CG farmers can only come if the causes for their distress are understood. You only seem to be interested in finding faults with the figures of CG govt which become irrelevant if we take interest in probing reasons for distress and finding solutions which will bring prosperity to the CG farmers.

How can farming be made into a profitable proposition? How can the production and productivity of crops and agri produce be increased? How can the same be properly marketed so as to allow the farmers better returns?

Whether you go for organic or inorganic farming, the trick lies in maximising production yields at lowest cost.

For CG, if you concentrate on the above points then you will have a good solution in hand.

Discovering farmer suicide in Chhattisgarh
Shubhranshu Choudhary

Why does India need a bunch of city dweller computerwallas to
discover that farmers in its villages, are committing suicide in
alarmingly large numbers? Does it tell us something about the health
of our other institutions as well? Asks Shubhranshu Choudhary

Re: Jeet gayee Bhajpa, toot gayee dukaan

Some three-four years back Raman Singh had a press conference at his
residence after his "successful return" from Beijing, Singapore and
Pataya. There a journalist tossed a question towards Raman Singh, which
model he had chosen to replicate in Raipur. Raman Singh quitely replied: "It
was certainly a study tour but the purpose was not to replicate any model.
We too had sent journalists to Singapore and Pataya. I too can ask you
what was the outcome of your study." Many journalists bowed down their heads
and chuckled. This way the watchdogs were humbled. 'Deshbandhu' had written
in detail about the journalists' behaviour during the 'study tour'.

Many ministers, MLAs, officials enjoyed foreign jaunts on the pretext
of turning Raipur into another New York, Singapore, London and what not but
Raipur remained in shambles. This village-like city stinks badly. Dust, dirt,
mosquitoes and pollution emanating from the 50-odd sponge iron units rule
the city. The more intriguing is the opposition's silence to the pollution,
dust and dirt.

In this "Singapore" the number of wheezing, sneezing and coughing people is
increasing day-by-day as this city has highest number of people suffering
from asthma, bronchitis, TB, lung related diseases, malaria, jaundice, and
chikungunya. It's water is highly contaminated in absence of sanitary line
and the 'Nistari' water goes straight into the water bodies. Trees in this
city are the most unwanted thing and environment is highly abused here. But
'the Gutkha eating and spitting' ministers
relentlessly prattle about converting Raipur into Singapore.

When Raman Singh was in Bangalore a few months back, I was praying that some
good sense should prevail upon him to convert his own capital, if not like
Singapore then at least his party ruled state's capital- Bangalore.

The demolition drive was the much needed thing in Raipur because the roads
were too narrow. If the ruling coterie could think of extensive plantation
drive (i mean tree plantation, not the sponge iron plantation) and
underground drainage system, then it is well and good.

I thank Vijendra for this nice report. With all humility I would like
to tell the members of CGNet that there are issues other than Bastar,
Naxal, Salwa Judum in Chhattisgarh, which are needed to be highlighted and
discussed in this forum.

More suggestions, discussions and comments on Raipur are required.

CGnet in Blog : A Citizen Journalism platform in Chhattisgarh

A Citizen Journalism platform in Chhattisgarh

http://brpbhaskar.blogspot.com/2009/02/citizen-journalism-platform-in.html

Chhattisgarh often makes headlines with unpalatable news, like the
arrest and trial of Dr. Binayak Sen, medical practitioner and human
rights defender.

Good things are also happening in Chhattisgarh. An example is CGnet,
which has been operating for five years now.

CGnet is a Citizen Journalism platform where the subject is the
development of Chhattisgarh, and the people discuss and act.

The belief is that everyone is a journalist and Information and
Communication Technology can help leapfrog across many hurdles in the
way. It is an effort to start a dialogue between tribal and others
with the help of ICT.

CGNet is also making all efforts for the communities to have their own
Community Radio.

CGNet serves as an ''E Gram Panchayat of the people of Chhattisgarh''.
It is also a library and reference point. Here people can raise their
issues with the help of ICT and discuss, debate and take action on
them. Some literate tribals have been trained on the use of computers,
in Hindi, which can be used for writing in the local languages.

Last year CGnet received the Manthan award under the e-news category.
It was chosen for the award from among 14 entries from India, Sri
Lanka , Bangladesh and other South Asian nations.
