Red zone reposes faith in BJP

NEW DELHI: BJP may have suffered a severe jolt losing its ground in
many pockets, but its base in the naxal-affected areas remains intact.
The Red Zone continues to repose faith in the saffron party by giving
it the highest number of seats — nine out of 25 this time — in
Maoist-dominated constituencies for the third consecutive time.

The party got the best figure (15 out of 25) in the naxal-affected
zones in 1999 and continued to dominate the scene in 2004 by getting
nine seats. The number has remained the same in 2009. It ally, JD(U)
has bagged two seats.

The 2009 results show that BJP has not only won Warangal, Gaya,
Hazaribagh, Lohardaga, Bastar, Surguja, Rajnandgaon, Kanker and
Balaghat constituencies but also got a higher percentage of votes
there as compared to 2004. Its ally JD(U) has won two such seats in
Bihar — Aurangabad and Jahanabad.

Although there are some other constituencies which witnessed worrying
levels of naxal violence, there were relatively higher number of
incidents — affecting 20% of police stations — in these 25 seats. The
other seats that fall in this category are: Khammam, Karimnagar and
Mahabubnagar in Andhra Pradesh; Chatra, Palamau and Singhbhum in
Jharkhand; Chimur (Gadchiroli) and Bhandara (Gondia) in Maharashtra;
Deogarh, Koraput, Sundargarh and Sambalpur in Orissa; and Bardhaman
Purba and Medinipur in West Bengal.

These seats which went in favour of different political parties —
Congress (5), BJD (2) and TDP, NCP, CPI, CPM, TRS, JMM, independent
(one each) this year.

But, why have the maximum number of naxal-affected constituencies
repeatedly gone in favour of BJP? An expert on the issue, D
Bandopadhyay, attributed this to naxals' call to boycott polls before
every general election and BJP's successful attempt to counter the
Christian missionaries' alleged proselytizing exercise in the
tribal-dominated areas across the country — be it Chhattisgarh,
Jharkhand, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.

State government must stop harrassing Vanvasi Chetna Ashram

Dear all

The evil intentions of the state government stands exposed in their double standard while dealing with Vanvasi Chetna Ashram, who is doing excellent work in the area for the benefit of the poor tribals who are neglected so far by the state agencies.

While state isduty boundnot only to respect the rights of the people but also to protect them. The fact that people of Dantewada mostof whomare tribals have beenneglected sinceindependence.Huge amount of money has beenstated to be spent for their all round development but the hard reality is that they are not only the poorest, illiterates but also made vulnerable. There is no need to have any certificate from anyauthorities to look at the hard realities. The poor condition of health care, education, public distribution system, neglect of farm sector, paucity of even safe drinking water are only some of the areas to unveil the real faces of corrupt people in power who have milked those tribals all these sixty two years.

While the government has failed to discharge itsConstitutional responsibilities,it has also failed to supportthose who are doing excellentwork in the area.Vanvasi Chetna Ashram has proved that they are doing much better than the government and is a lesson for the authorities to learn lessons, how to deal with local poor tribals.

I see the game to disturb Vanvasi Chetna Ashram is just to fulfill thehidden agenda to force tribals out of their villageto stay at state run relief camps while Vanvasi Chetna Ashram is helping those tribals who wants toresettle themselves at their villages. This is confirmed by the actions of the state. The intentional delay in serving notice and selecting those dates on which courts are closed is an act to deny VCAto knock at the doors to seek justice. The matter becomes even more serious whenwe learn that the matter is already sub judice. The game is not played on VCA but is alsoagainst the poor tribals of the area for and with whom VCA has worked all these years and still working despite many difficulties.

I strongly denounce the act of the local authorities and urge them to refrain from taking any action without giving an opportunity to seek justice.

Theoptions left with VCA under the circumstances are

1. They should submit a protest letter stating the facts addressed to the SDM,and submitting them at the residence of the SDM, Collector, District Judge, Chairman State Human Rights Commission, Chairman, National Human Rights Commission,Chief Justice of High Court of Chhattisgarh and also Chief Justice of Supreme Court of India.

2. To use the democratic right of protest by sitting in front of the bulldozers, come what may, demandingto respect their right to seek justice and give them clear time to approch the court of law.
