Qualifications: - Anti-capitalist ideological orientation and a basic understanding of social movements in Mexico and the US - Fluent in Spanish and English (able to provide translations) - Basic computer literacy - Experience with community-based organizing and/or international solidarity work - Willing to work hard to change the world Preference given to applicants with: - Experience working with undocumented workers - Experience teaching ESL - Experience using popular education pedagogy - Experience with public speaking - Experience with web site development and/or management The interns will coordinate national speaking tours (which includes travel with guest speakers to facilitate and lead presentations and provide translation) organize among the undocumented community in the greater DC area and Chicago, and share administrative functions, including maintenance of website and list-serve, recruit and manage volunteers, and represent MSN at various local and national grassroots organizing meetings and conferences. The Chicago intern will also have responsibilities associated with the development of the Autonomous University for Social Movements, an MSN project that combines community based education and research with community based activism. Responsibilities - Itinerate and travel on 1-2 national speaking tours each six months. - Assist with volunteer training and utilization - Work with undocumented workers organized in community-based projects in DC and Chicago - In DC, coordinate occasional legislative activities - In Chicago, work on the development of the Autonomous University for Social Movements, particularly development of the study abroad component in Mexico and the popular education components in DC and Chicago Requirements - Minimum commitment of six months with ability to travel 2 to 3 weeks at a time - At least 21 years old - Valid US drivers license - Spanish and English fluency with ability to translate public presentations - Strong oral and written communication skills - Excellent interpersonal skills - Detail oriented. - Excellent team player with ability to work independently - Ability to take ownership and manage projects. Successful interns can expect bi-yearly evaluations, at least one skill development opportunity such as a class or workshop in a subject or skill that will benefit their internship (such as website development skills, database creation/maintenance, fundraising, ESL teaching certification, etc.), and at least one trip to Mexico. The successful intern can also expect to be part of internal placement opportunities when paid staff positions are available and before they are announced to the general public.
