The steps you've laid out there should work. The fact that `make' is trying to recompile from Scheme sources indicates that the timestamps on the files extracted from the tarball are wrong. Try scrapping those directories and re-extracting them from the distribution tarball, as Alexander says, and let us know if that doesn't sort it.
