As an attorney, I can say, the law varies greatly on these issues. In
places like CA they are more restrictive and you can face legal sanctions for
harming a pet for ANY reason. However, in some areas, especially rural ones, the
law is just the opposite...you can kill an animal simply for being on your
property. We have a strange local ordinance in our area. It is illegal to kill a
domestic animal unless HUMAN life is at stake. other animals do not count. The
owner of a dog that has killed livestock or other animals is automatically
financially responsible for the loss BUT (get this...this is weird!) Only if the
victims own dogs are liscensed! If your dog isn't liscenced, then you gotta go
to court. This is weird being that only maybe 5 percent of our counties dogs are
liscenced since the state liscensing law is not enforced. If you are found
liable, your homeowners policy can cover the liability.

the neighborhood, - Connie
Hey, Connie.
I just got a great idea from reading the other posts. The officer that took my
statment the day I found that the neighbor's Great Danes had killed my Mini
horse also told me that I can shoot to kill the dogs if they came back on to
my land. Check with your city, and see if it is leagle to shoot a dog dead if
it is on your property. If you can then go back to your neighbor, and politely
say " I have asked you to keep your dogs on your property. The animal control
has been down her several time telling you to do the same thing, and you
refuse to keep him/her/them on your property. I have checked it out, and
I am well within my rights to shoot your dog dead if it is on my property
again. So I am giving you fair warring. If you don't keep your dogs off my
property, I am going to shoot them to kill." Even if you won't really do it,
your neighbor won't know that. It might be enough to scare them into keeping
their dogs off of your land. Sorry for my bad spelling.
Jennifer.
