Hi Everyone,
Since I have become more educated on dewclaws I am even more upset
about the mistaken removal of Teddy's front dewclaw. Apparently the
front dew claws are very close to clusters of nerves and main
arteries. It is actually dangerous to remove them in older puppies
or adult dogs and then there is always the danger of infection
afterwards. Also it is difficult to close the incision because there
is very little extra tissue there to work with. It looks like Teddy
had 3-4 stitches there. Thankfully his leg looks like it is healing
fine.

Some vets refuse to remove any dew claws as they say it is against
their code of ethics to do unnecessary surgery on an animal. The
small detached nail on Teddy's back foot that I wanted removed was
apparently not a dew claw but just a weird little nail on the top of
his back right foot. That little nail was tiny but grew around in a
circle and it was difficult to see but needed to be removed. They
did remove that also when I pointed out their mistake. They removed
it in about 2 seconds and it required no stitches.

Our little chi babies are so dependent on us. I vow to never let
anything like this happen again. I often feel like I lack trust and
that I am overprotective but in this case not protective enough.

Thanks for everyone's words of support.

Jean and Teddy
