I'm aware of several people on the lists I'm on who have litterbox trained
their chihuahuas. More popular are the absorbent pee pads. If you use a
litterbox, you MUST use either shredded newspaper or the like, or *dog*
litter.

Varies with the dog. Some cats have separation anxiety. Some dogs have it.
Some don't. Chihuahuas are very social creatures. If you're going to leave
your chi alone frequently for long periods of time, consider getting two
chihuahuas to keep each other company, or a less social breed.
> 3. How much do they bark?
Again, varies with the dog. I have one who barks whenever someone comes to
the door, and one who never barks.
> 4. Do they have a distinctive doggie odor?
Mine don't, but they're indoors except for leash walks, kept bathed fairly
frequently (because of husband's allergies), and they eat a very
high-quality homemade diet. I'm told that dogs on non-premium kibble or
canned food have a great deal more odor.
> 5. Do they get along with cats?
Mine (cats and chihuahuas) get along just fine. One cat ignores them
entirely. One cat tries (vainly, the chis aren't interested) to play with
them. One cat lies at my side and serves as a plushy bed, I'm not kidding,
for one of my chihuahuas who inevitably curls up on top of him.

> could bring something inside and make our cats sick. Is this a problem
> to worry about?
Anything the dog could track in on their teeny paws, you or any visitor to
your house could track in much more easily. If your cats and your chi are
current on vaccines, you have nothing to worry about.
