so only light chis have a merle gene? Dark chis cannot have a merle gene? I

necessarily in the phenotype? -- em
No, only light merles can appear as not being merles.  Merle gene is a dilute
gene - meaning it lightens the coat in a splotchy pattern.  With light merles,
it may be more difficult to tell that they are truly merles.  That is why it is
not advisable to breed lighter colored merles.
