Also, before investing too much money, I would have the vet take a blood sample and check for Feline FIV (like human HIV), Leukemia and FIP. All three are fatal and the chance for recovery slim if he's positive. We always checked those three things first on any stray cat.
I am pleased that you cared enough to help a stray. So many people can just turn a blind eye to suffering. You have a kind heart. :) I too have taken many a cat to the vet that wasn't mine. Being around horses means being around cats. It always upset me that the barn dogs were taken care of but the cats were "expendable". I hope all turns out well with the kitty.
